Rhabdoid fighters

Baran’s story

Baran is fighting a relapsed AT/RT (atypical teratoid / rhaboid tumour)

Baran was initially diagnosed in September 2014 whilst living in Turkey. He presented with unsteadiness, morning vomiting and a limp. There was a delay of a number of weeks before diagnosis sadly due to doctors not recognising the severity of his symptoms. By the time Baran was diagnosed, he could no longer sit or stand up.

“We heard those 4 horrible words "Your Child Has Cancer." This was the biggest blow ever, but to then top it, you hear it's AT/RT.  Baran had his initial treatment in Turkey, comprising of aggressive chemotherapy and radiotherapy. However suddenly, 6 months into treatment he lost his balance and became unable to walk again. His parents were told he had relapsed and that there was no more they could do.

Baran remained stable however, and Baran’s parents resorted to flying to the UK for another opinion. Incredibly, a repeat MRI showed no visible signs of tumour, but did show damage to the brain as a result of medications being given incorrectly during his treatment abroad. Baran had a year in remission, however, in November 2016, devastatingly, 3 new tumours were picked up on a scan. The largest was removed by surgery, and Baran had radiotherapy to his full brain and spine to slow down tumour progression.

“Even though it's not the news any parent wants to hear, I'm just

glad my son is in the right place getting the treatment he deserves.”

“He keeps us going and brings us so much joy.”
